#03 S.S. Yorktown NCC-1717 Model Die Cast Ship BONUS ISSUE (Eaglemoss / Star Trek)
The United Space Ship Yorktown (SS Yorktown) holds a unique place in Star Trek history as the original name for Gene Roddenberry’s central starship in his 1964 proposal to NBC. The ship’s name was inspired by the USS Yorktown (CV-5), a World War II American aircraft carrier, which itself was named after the decisive 1781 Battle of Yorktown—a pivotal victory led by General George Washington.
Interestingly, the historical WWII Yorktown was a sister ship to the USS Enterprise (CV-6), after which Roddenberry ultimately renamed his starship. The registry number NCC-1717 was later assigned to the Yorktown by Gregory Jein in his influential article “The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship”, published in T-Negative fanzine (April 1973, Issue #27). This designation was later canonized and expanded in official Star Trek reference works by Michael Okuda, including the Star Trek Encyclopedia.
This strictly limited-edition Star Trek starship model was created exclusively for Comic-Con, making it a rare collector’s item. Unlike standard releases in the Eaglemoss Star Trek starship collection, this edition did not come with a collector’s magazine, further emphasizing its exclusive status.
A must-have for Star Trek historians, collectors, and fans, this U.S.S. Yorktown model represents a fascinating “what if” moment in Star Trek history, offering a tangible connection to Roddenberry’s original vision for the franchise.
