Anelka emerged from the France youth system and burst onto the scene at Arsenal under Arsène Wenger, winning the league and FA Cup Double in his debut season in 1998. A world-record move to Real Madrid followed, then a return to the Premier League with Liverpool on loan, then Manchester City, Fenerbahçe, Bolton Wanderers and eventually Chelsea- where he finally found a settled home and delivered his best years.

At Stamford Bridge, Anelka was transformed under Carlo Ancelotti into a reliable, clinical striker, finishing top scorer in the Premier League in the 2008-09 season as Chelsea won the FA Cup. The following season he was part of the side that won the league and cup Double. For France he earned 69 caps and scored 14 international goals, appearing at the 2006 World Cup final. His career - restless, brilliant, decorated - remains one of football's great what-ifs.
