He won two Champions Leagues in three seasons with the Galácticos, scoring the opening goal in the 2000 final against Valencia with a spectacular volley that was later voted goal of the tournament. Playing alongside Zidane, Figo, Raúl and Morientes, McManaman was a genuine contributor to one of the most celebrated club sides of the modern era.

For England he earned 37 caps, though a turbulent relationship with various national managers limited his international appearances. He remains one of the most successful English players to have thrived in Spanish football.
