Phragmites australis - Common Reed, Native Pond Marginal Plant
Phragmites australis, known as common reed or Norfolk reed, is a very tall UK native grass, reaching 2.5–4 m. From August to October it carries feathery dark purple flower heads, and the leaves turn light brown in autumn.

Is common reed suitable for a garden pond?
Not for most. The RHS says it is a vigorous spreader that forms colonies, needs plenty of space and can become a nuisance. It is not suitable for small ponds. Plant it beside lakes, large ponds and wetlands, or in a large container.
Is it good for wildlife?
Large reedbeds of common reed are home to bitterns, marsh harriers and bearded tits. A garden clump is too small for these birds, but the RHS still suggests it for wildlife gardens.
How to plant and care for it
Plant in spring in shallow water or wet soil. Cut the stems back in late autumn or winter. It is generally free of pests and diseases.
